Fireworks patriarch dies

GeorgeR. Zambelli Sr. owner of the world famous Zambelli Fireworks Internationale corporation, died on Christmas Day at the age of 79 from complications of the flu. He also had been suffering from cancer.

As a fitting tribute to him, two fireworks displays were held:  at his funeral service on the morning of Dec. 31 and then a world class, 25-minute one New Year's Eve night.

"Boom Boom" Zambelli or "Mr. Fireworks," as he was called, was known for such shows as Desert Storm, Thunder over Louisville, Statue of Liberty celebration, in addition to many other displays. His company averaged 3,500 shows a year.

A book was published recently by Paul Eriksson Inc. Publishing, titled, "Zambelli: The First Family of Fireworks."
